I don't think the fonts are the problem even if the vn is in english some won't work without changing system locale or runing on emulator the fonts always bug like that even if you install the language packs they just won't recognize or load the fonts. You'll have to edit the launch options to have something like locale,probably LC_ALL=ja_JP.utf8 ,if this doesn't fix the issue,it should mean you didn't install the font the game uses. In these games,some of them use custom fonts and it is hard to figure out what they are,many of them use MS GOTHIC for example.
